Letters from Home – sabbatical project

I am happy to say I am in my second month of a 6 month sabbatical. I am working on a project entitled “Letters from Home” – an autobiographical journey through letters, song and art of three generations of women. I have been calling myself a time traveler lately, reading letters written to my maternal grandmother from her mother who lived in England. It is a story of two lives that never saw each other again once my grandmother left England for Nova Scotia in 1935. I am hoping to complete the 1st draft by June, have it edited and then, apply for grants and take it on tour throughout the Maritimes; museums, concert series, schools, etc. I am hoping everyone will be able to relate to it and find their own stories. Letter writing is a dying art form, children not learning to cursive write in schools, and I am hoping that by presenting this multi-media performance, it will invigorate people to embrace it again!

Stay tuned!

You’ve reminded me of my “grandmother’s suitcase,” sitting in my office closet, Paula. It’s been waiting for me to explore the letters of mine she saved for over thirty years. Thank you. And I look forward to someday hearing what you came up with. Soon, I hope.

I am so pleased to hear this, Janet. A suitcase? What a treasure trove! Hope to see you again next year at Ogontz as a confident mezzo soprano if not soprano!
